OUTBACK ART TRIPS

To find out how it all began read on…

In 1988, the late Maud Kemp, the founder of the Australian Artist magazine, approached NT Tourism to see if they knew of a tour operator who could take out 28 artists for 18 days painting in Central Australia. The answer was yes, Gerry Gerrard, who owns Sandrifter Safaris and specialises in one of a kind private charters.

The 28 artists travelled in two Sandrifter buses and painted in Harts Range, Arltunga and Rainbow Valley. Many artists from this original group have been coming out with us since this time and it was fantastic that a few of them joined us again this year.

From this first trip many art trips around Australia were to follow, travelling to Kakadu, the Gulf country, Kimberley, Flinders Ranges, Lake Mungo, Painted Desert, Simpson Desert etc, while other trips concentrated on the wonderful landscapes of Central Australia. There have even been a couple of Sandrifter art trips cruising the Murray River in a houseboat!

Over the years, artists from around Australia and New Zealand have joined Sandrifter art trips. Also, many of the leading schools and universities in the country have organised privately tutored trips with Sandrifter including Monash University, the Australian National University, Box Hill TAFE and the National Art School. Corinne and Gerry first met when she came out on an art trip with the ANU !

We are very aware of the deep friendships that have developed between many of our artists over the years. Friendships based on a common love of creating art in the outback, of sharing that special sunrise or the serenity of the campfire. Experiencing that rush of energy when the light, the brush, the paint and the artist are all working as one. Other shared experiences like being “momentarily delayed” (in other words bogged), tipping over camp kitchens or getting flooded in, make for rich storytelling and fond memories.

This is an opportunity to thank you, the artists, who have supported us in so many ways over the years, both personally and from a business perspective. You have told your family, friends and colleagues about us, joined us on repeated trips and organised your own trips. We are pleased that we have been able to help you develop your own deep appreciation of and relationship with, this wonderful country of ours - and create some great art work along the way.

Thank you all - we look forward to the art trips of the future
